Snakke vs Duolingo for Norwegian
Use Duolingo to start. It is free, fun, and good at building a daily habit and a first few hundred Norwegian words. But it plateaus around B1, teaches recognition rather than production, and does not prepare you for the Norskprøve.
Use Snakke when you are serious about reaching B2 and fluency, or when you have a Norskprøve to pass. Snakke trains and grades writing and speaking, uses the real exam format, and gives you full mock exams. Many learners do both: Duolingo early, Snakke to actually get to B2. They solve different problems.

What Duolingo is genuinely good at
Duolingo is one of the best habit builders ever made. The streak, the short lessons, and the gamified path get people to show up daily, which is the hardest part of language learning. For your first contact with Norwegian, it is a reasonable and free place to begin.
Where it stops, and why that matters for B2
The Norwegian tree is shallow compared with big languages, and it leans on recognition exercises. You can finish a lot of it and still freeze when you have to write a formal letter or speak in a paired oral exam. The Norskprøve B2 scores those productive skills directly, and Duolingo does not train or grade them.
This is the plateau most learners hit: they understand a lot, but they cannot produce Norwegian under pressure. Closing that gap is the whole point of Snakke.
What Snakke adds
Snakke picks up where Duolingo leaves off. It grades your writing and speaking instantly on the B2 discriminators, runs full timed mock exams including the oral part, drills exam-format reading and listening in Norwegian, and gives you an AI tutor that keeps you producing Norwegian instead of switching to English. It also tracks readiness per skill so you know exactly what to work on.
Try it, do not just read about it.

Is Snakke better than Duolingo?
They are built for different stages. Duolingo is better for absolute beginners and habit building. Snakke is better for reaching B2 and passing the Norskprøve, because it trains and grades production and uses the real exam format. Many people use Duolingo first, then Snakke.
Can I just use Duolingo for the Norskprøve?
It is not enough on its own. Duolingo does not grade writing or speaking and does not cover the exam format, which is most of what the Norskprøve tests. Pair it with exam-focused practice.
