Norskprøve B1 muntlig: example tasks and how to answer them

Most people who search for a Norskprøve B1 oral example want two things: to see what the questions look like, and to hear what a good answer sounds like. This page gives you both. For the official sample tests, Kompetanse Norge publishes practice material on prove.hkdir.no, and you should use it. What follows is how to turn that material into answers that score.

What the B1 oral usually looks like

The oral at this level typically combines a short individual task, where you talk about a familiar topic such as work, family, leisure or travel, with a conversation task where you and another candidate discuss a question together and exchange opinions. Exact timings and task wording can change between test sessions, so check the current description on the official site before your date.

At B1 the examiner is listening for something specific: can you give a reason, not only a fact? 'Jeg liker å reise' is A2. 'Jeg liker å reise fordi jeg får oppleve andre kulturer, selv om det kan bli dyrt' is B1.

Example topics to rehearse

These are the kinds of prompts that appear in practice material. Answer each out loud for one to two minutes.

A reusable answer structure

Use four moves: say what, say why, give an example, then add a contrast. It keeps you talking, and it is exactly the explaining-and-giving-reasons skill B1 tests.

Say what: 'Jeg synes at hjemmekontor er ...'.

  • Example: for eksempel, som når.

Handling the conversation task

In the paired conversation, your partner's answers are part of your score. React to what they said ('Det er et godt poeng, men jeg ser det litt annerledes'), ask them a question back, and do not just wait for your turn. If you freeze, say so in Norwegian and keep going: 'La meg tenke et øyeblikk.' Staying in Norwegian matters more than being perfect.

How to practise without a partner

Record yourself answering the prompts above, listen back, and fix one thing per round. A speaking partner that answers in Norwegian and pushes back is better, which is what the AI tutor in Snakke is for: you rehearse the back and forth on demand, with feedback, before the real thing.

Try a free practice question

Complete the B1 answer with the best connector: 'Jeg liker å jobbe hjemmefra, ___ jeg sparer mye tid på reisen.'

  • men
  • fordi
  • selv om

fordi

'Fordi' introduces a reason, which is the core B1 skill. 'Men' and 'selv om' express contrast, so the sentence would not make sense.

Questions

How long should my answer be in the B1 oral?

For the individual task, aim for roughly one to two minutes of connected speech, but check the current task description on the official Norskprøve site since timings can change. In the conversation, shorter turns that respond to your partner are better than long monologues.

Do I need perfect grammar to pass B1 speaking?

No. At B1 you are assessed on being understood, explaining and giving reasons, and keeping the conversation going. Small grammar errors are expected. Freezing or switching to English hurts more.
