Free Norskprøve practice test: where to find sample questions and how to use them
You can prepare for the Norskprøve without paying anything for the first round of practice. The question is how to use free material well, because doing a test once and moving on is the least effective way to learn from it.
Free official practice
Kompetanse Norge publishes practice material for reading, listening, writing and oral at prove.hkdir.no under 'Øv til prøven'. It is the closest you can get to the real format, so start there. Several independent sites also offer free example tasks at A2/B1 and B1/B2 so you can see the format before paying for anything.
Snakke also lets you try a practice question without paying. Each guide on this site has one, and the full app lets you work through reading, listening, writing and speaking exercises with an AI tutor.
Sit it like the real test
A practice test only predicts your result if the conditions are similar.
- Set a timer and do not pause it.
- No dictionary, no translation, no second try on the listening.
- Do the writing by hand or on a plain editor without spellcheck if that is how you will sit it.
- Say your oral answers out loud and record them.
Review is where you improve
For every wrong answer, write down the reason: vocabulary gap, grammar slip, misread question, ran out of time, or fell for a distractor. After three tests you will see a pattern, and that pattern is your study plan. Redo the same task a week later to check the fix worked.
How often to take a full test
Take a full mock about every two weeks in the last two months before your date, and short skill drills in between. Taking a full mock every day wears you out without teaching you much.
Which level to start from
If you are unsure whether you need B1 or B2, see our guide to Norskprøve B1 versus B2, then start with the free samples for the level you are aiming at. If the first sample feels far too easy or far too hard, switch level rather than grinding.
Pick the correct form: 'Jeg har ___ i to år.' (bo)
- bodde
- bodd
- bor
Show the answer
bodd
After 'har' you need the perfect participle: har bodd. 'Bodde' is the simple past and 'bor' is present.

Is there a free Norskprøve practice test?
Yes. The official practice material on prove.hkdir.no is free, and several providers offer free example tasks. Snakke offers free practice in the browser as well.
Do the practice tests match the real exam?
Official samples are the closest match. Third-party tests are useful for volume, but the wording and difficulty can differ, so always include some official material.
