Norskprøve skriftlig tips: how to score higher on the writing test
The writing test rewards two things at once: a text that is long enough to show what you can do, and a text that is correct enough to be understood easily. Candidates who only chase length lose points to word order and spelling. Candidates who play it too safe write short, correct texts that never show their level. These tips help you land in between.
Know the task types before the day
Practice material from Kompetanse Norge shows tasks such as writing an invitation, describing a picture, and writing a complaint, with the harder tasks asking for an argued text on a topic. Do at least one of each from the official samples under a timer, because the first time you meet a task type should not be in the exam room.
Give every longer text a clear structure
Open with one sentence that says what you are writing about, develop two or three points in separate paragraphs, each with a reason or example, and close with a short conclusion or recommendation. Graders read dozens of texts; a visible structure makes your level easy to see.
- Introduction: state the topic and your purpose.
- Body: one point per paragraph, with a reason or example.
- Conclusion: sum up your position in one or two sentences.
Use koblingsord, but use them correctly
Connectors show that you can link ideas: derfor, imidlertid, i tillegg, på den ene siden, på den andre siden, til slutt. A common trap is word order after them. After 'derfor' and 'imidlertid' the verb comes second: 'Derfor tok jeg kontakt med dere', not 'Derfor jeg tok kontakt med dere'.
The mistakes that cost the most points
These show up again and again in learner texts, so check for them on every practice text you write.
- Verb not in second position in main clauses (V2).
- Wrong word order in subordinate clauses, for example the position of 'ikke'.
- Mixing up definite and indefinite forms (en bok, boken, bøker).
- Wrong gender or spelling of common compounds.
- Writing in an informal register in a formal text such as a complaint.
A two-minute self-check
Leave the last two minutes to read through once: verbs, word order after connectors, noun forms, and spelling of words you looked at in preparation. Then get a second opinion on your practice texts, from a teacher, a friend, or an AI tutor that explains each correction. Feedback you understand is what makes the next text better.
Which sentence has correct word order? Use it as a rule: after 'derfor' the verb comes second.
- Derfor jeg sendte e-posten.
- Derfor sendte jeg e-posten.
- Derfor sendte e-posten jeg.
Show the answer
Derfor sendte jeg e-posten.
In a Norwegian main clause the finite verb is always in second position. 'Derfor' fills position one, so the verb 'sendte' comes next and the subject 'jeg' follows.

How long should my Norskprøve text be?
Follow the word guidance in each task. As a rule, write as much as you can while staying correct: a text that is too short cannot show your level, and a very long text full of errors loses points.
Does handwriting or spelling matter on the Norskprøve?
The writing is assessed on how well you communicate, including accuracy. Spelling and grammar errors that make the text hard to understand cost more than small slips, but accuracy still counts.
