Norskprøve reading tips: how to read faster and answer more accurately
The reading test measures whether you can find and understand information in Norwegian texts under time pressure. It is not a test of reading every word. The candidates who do best have a method.
Read the questions first
Skim the questions and options before you read the text. You then read with a purpose, and you stop spending energy on paragraphs that no question asks about. This single habit usually saves more time than any vocabulary you could learn in the same minutes.
Manage the clock yourself
On the reading test you divide your time across tasks. Decide a budget per task, note the time when you start, and move on when you hit it. Return to the hard questions at the end. A blank answer scores nothing, a guess might.
At B2: read for stance, not just facts
Higher-level questions ask what the writer thinks, not what happens. Look for opinion markers such as 'etter min mening', 'dessverre', 'overraskende', and for contrast words like 'imidlertid'. Ask after each paragraph: is the writer for, against, or neutral?
Beat the distractors
Multiple-choice options are written to tempt you.
- An option that repeats words from the text is not automatically right.
- Extreme words (alltid, aldri, alle) are usually wrong.
- The right answer often rephrases the text in different words.
- Check the whole option, not just its first half.
Build speed with the right material
Read Norwegian every day: NRK, local news, opinion columns. Do timed sections from the official samples on prove.hkdir.no and from Snakke's mock exams, then review every wrong answer and ask why the distractor tempted you.
A text says: 'Mange synes at bompenger er for dyre. Imidlertid har de gjort bymiljøet bedre.' What does the writer mean?
- Bompenger er for dyre.
- Bompenger har en fordel, selv om mange klager.
- Bymiljøet er blitt verre.
Show the answer
Bompenger har en fordel, selv om mange klager.
'Imidlertid' (however) turns the sentence: the first half is what many people think, the second half is the writer's counterpoint. Option 1 is the tempting distractor that repeats the first half.
