Failed the Norskprøve B1 oral? What to do before the next sitting

You needed B1 on the oral test for citizenship, and the result came back A2. That is frustrating, but it is also very common, and the gap between A2 and B1 on the oral is smaller and more specific than it feels right now.

This guide covers what the result means, how the retake works, and a short plan that targets exactly what separates A2 from B1. Rules and prices are set by HK-dir and your local test centre, so check with them before you book.

What an A2 result on the oral usually means

An A2 result rarely means you do not know enough Norwegian. It usually means your answers stayed at the A2 pattern: short, correct sentences that describe, without reasons, comparisons or opinions. B1 asks you to explain why, give an example, compare then and now, and keep a conversation going with the other candidate.

So the fix is not mostly new vocabulary. It is a new way of answering.

  • A2: 'Jeg bor i Bergen. Jeg liker Bergen.'
  • B1: 'Jeg bor i Bergen, og jeg liker det fordi naturen er fin, selv om det regner mye. Før bodde jeg i en stor by, så det var en stor forandring.'

You can retake only the oral

The Norskprøve has separate subtests, and you can register for one or more of them. If the oral is the only part you need for citizenship, you only register for the oral.

If you have taken the test before, you usually pay for the retake yourself. Test centres set their own price: for example Bergen lists 1,034 kr for the oral only, other municipalities charge up to about 1,450 kr. As a repeat or paying candidate you normally register as a private candidate (privatist) or directly with your local adult education centre. Many centres run the test four times a year, so the next sitting is rarely more than a few months away.

A 6 week plan from A2 to B1 on the oral

Ten to fifteen minutes of speaking out loud every day beats one long session on Sunday. Record yourself, listen back, and count how often you gave a reason or an example.

  • Weeks 1 and 2: take 20 common oral questions and answer each one with the pattern statement, reason (fordi), example (for eksempel), contrast (men, selv om).
  • Weeks 3 and 4: practise past and future. Talk about what you did before you moved and what you plan to do. B1 needs more than the present tense.
  • Week 5: practise opinions and agreeing or disagreeing: 'Jeg synes at...', 'Jeg er enig, men...', 'Hva tenker du?' Ask the other candidate questions, because interaction is scored.
  • Week 6: two full mock conversations with a partner, a teacher or an AI tutor, under time pressure, with no notes.

Where Snakke fits, honestly

Snakke is not an oral examiner, and it cannot give you an official level. What it does is give you the material your speaking is built from: vocabulary and grammar drills at A2 to B2, and an AI tutor you can chat with in Norwegian every day, which corrects your sentences and pushes you to give reasons and opinions. Type or say your answers, then say them out loud again on your own. No app can guarantee a pass, but daily production practice is what moves an A2 answer to B1.

Try a free practice question

Which answer to 'Hva liker du å gjøre i fritiden?' sounds most like B1?

  • Jeg liker å gå tur.
  • Jeg liker å gå tur i skogen fordi det gir meg ro, men om vinteren trener jeg heller inne.
  • Gå tur. Lese bøker.
Show the answer

Jeg liker å gå tur i skogen fordi det gir meg ro, men om vinteren trener jeg heller inne.

It gives a reason (fordi) and a contrast (men), and adds detail about when. That is the B1 pattern. The first answer is correct but A2, and the third is not a sentence.

Questions

Can I retake only the oral part of the Norskprøve?

Yes. You choose which subtests to register for, so if you only need a better oral result you register for the oral only.

How much does it cost to retake the Norskprøve oral?

If you have taken the test before you usually pay yourself. Prices are set by each test centre, for example 1,034 kr for oral only in Bergen and up to about 1,450 kr elsewhere.

How long should I wait before retaking the oral?

Long enough to change how you answer. Four to eight weeks of daily speaking practice that targets reasons, opinions and past and future tense is a realistic window for many people at A2.

Does an A2 oral result count for citizenship?

Only for the groups UDI lets meet the requirement with A2, such as stateless applicants. Most applicants aged 18 to 67 need B1 on the oral test.
