Norskprøve B2 speaking: how the oral exam works and how to practise

Speaking is the part people fear most and prepare for least, usually because it is the hardest to rehearse alone. Here is how the B2 oral works and how to train for it even without a partner.

How the oral exam works

The Norskprøve speaking part is taken together with another candidate. You introduce yourself, talk about given topics, and take part in a conversation or a light discussion. You still receive your own individual grade, but a lot of it rests on how you interact, not just on a prepared monologue.

What the examiner is listening for

At B2 the examiner wants to hear you express and defend a point of view, respond to what the other person says, and keep the conversation moving. Fluency and interaction weigh heavily. A perfect accent is not the point; being understood, staying in Norwegian, and engaging is.

How to practise speaking alone

Speak out loud every day, even by yourself. Answer typical prompts, argue both sides of a topic, and practise reacting rather than reciting. A conversation partner that responds in Norwegian and pushes back is ideal, which is why an AI speaking partner helps: it lets you rehearse the back and forth of the paired exam, on demand, before the real thing.

  • Talk out loud daily, not silently.
  • Practise reacting and holding a position, not just monologues.
  • Rehearse the paired format, with a partner or an AI tutor.
  • Stay in Norwegian even when it is uncomfortable.

Train it, do not just read about it.
